Dahlias and farm country in Canby
Canby sits in some of the Willamette Valley's farmland.
A dahlia landmark
Swan Island Dahlias is a family-owned dahlia farm in Canby. Its own site says the family has grown dahlias since 1927. The site lists an annual dahlia festival in late summer, with the dates posted there each year.
Willamette Valley farm country
Wikipedia reports that the Willamette Valley is about 150 miles long and produces more than 170 crop and livestock items, including grass and legume seeds, tree fruits and nuts, berries, vegetables and nursery stock. The article credits ice-age floods for the valley's deep, fertile soil. The city's history page says early settlers at Baker Prairie farmed there from the 1830s and began growing apples in 1848.
Oregon State University Extension offers research-based gardening and crop information, including pages on nursery and greenhouse production and on flowers, shrubs and trees.
